Marisa has been a practicing paediatric speech and language therapy for over 11 years. She qualified in 2005, having completed an M.A. in Speech and Language Pathology and clinical fellowship year. She also has a B.A. in Psychology which enables her to understand the needs of the entire family and support parents as needed. Marisa has specialist knowledge in Autism, Early Intervention, Language Delay/Disorder, Speech Delay/Disorder and Dyslexia. She has significant experience working with children with Autism and has worked at several schools for children with special needs. Experience includes supporting young people who are having social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Marisa also works with younger children aged 3-5 years old experiencing mild difficulties in a school readiness programme. Emphasis is on working collaboratively with parents and other professionals in an immediate and high quality manner. Services include standardised, formal or informal assessment using the most recent and well respected tools. A good assessment is like a child’s learning fingerprint, unique to them. It highlights areas of relative strength and weakness, giving an overall profile of the child’s abilities. More importantly, a good assessment aims to identify the underlying reasons a child is not reaching their full potential. Any language or communication problem is likely to have significant effect on a child’s social or academic skills and behavior. This includes attention, listening or speech issues. The earlier a child’s problems are identified and treated, the less likely it is that problems will persist or get worse. Many communication disorders can be reversed or prevented with early help. Marisa enjoys working with all children to reach their full potential.
