About Paul

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, specialising in working with young people and adults. I have worked in a wide variety of settings, offering therapy, both individually and in groups, to people with a wide spectrum of difficulties.

I have over twenty years experience of working in the NHS, and continue to work in the NHS as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist. This experience had given me an understanding of working with people with a wide variety of difficulties, from a variety of backgrounds, and in different settings. I aim to provide a thoughtful, containing and safe environment in which people can think about themselves and their difficulties. As well as trying to understand a person’s difficulties and the challenges they face, I believe it is important to understand their strengths and abilities and to help them to build upon these in overcoming problems.

The idea of therapy may feel daunting to some, but I am a firm believer that therapy can be of great benefit to many people. If you are interested in the possibility of therapy, I can offer an initial consultation, which will be an opportunity for us to meet together, for me to get to know you and gain an understanding of your difficulties. The initial consultation allows us both to get a good sense of whether we can work together, and if so, think together about what would be a helpful way forward for you. I use different therapeutic models in my work, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behaviour therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy. A part of the initial consultation will be for us to think together about what approach might be most helpful to you.

I have also completed the National Intensive Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Training.

Experience

I have over 20 years experience of working in the NHS. I qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1999 and since that time have been working with adults in secondary care settings, and for the last ten years this has been as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, also managing and supervising other clinical psychologists, and offering training to others.

As the Lead Clinical Psychologist in a Community Mental Health Team, I have been responsible for developing and delivering a broad range of psychological therapies. A focus of my work throughout this time has been to ensure that all of those referred to our services can get the right help at the right time. I have extensive experience working with people with long standing and complex difficulties, who may experience intense emotions, urges to self-harm, or suicidal feelings. I work with individuals and couples and also have extensive experience developing, running and supervising group therapy in a variety of modalities.

I have specific training and long standing experience of offering people cognitive behavioural therapy to help with their difficulties. This approach helps people to understand how particular thinking and behavioural patterns can be linked to their emotional difficulties, and places a particular emphasis on working collaboratively to change these patterns and develop more helpful strategies. As part of this approach, I also make extensive use of mindfulness training – helping an individual to feel more in control of their thinking and to be more focussed on the present moment. I have also run dialectical behaviour therapy groups to help people who struggle to manage intense, overwhelming emotions. I have extensive experience of psychodynamic psychotherapy, which offers a way to explore underlying causes of difficulties and symptoms, with a specific focus on patterns of relating to others, including the therapeutic relationship, which is seen as an important way to understand an individual’s difficulties.
