I am a BACP Accredited experienced counsellor and I work with adolescents and adults on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period.
As a counsellor I work integratively which means that I recognise each person’s unique experiences and challenges; I draw on a range of psychotherapeutic approaches to provide counselling which is tailored to best meet the needs of each individual.
I can also offer ad-hoc or ongoing consultation and support for parents supporting children with mental health and emotional wellbeing difficulties.
Qualifications & Experience
I have a BA Honours Degree (First) in Integrative-Relational Counselling from the University of Middlesex.
I have been practising as a counsellor for 5 years and have worked with adults at a GP’s practice. However the majority of my counselling has been with adolescents and young adults and I am passionate about working with this age group. My first experience as a counsellor was to undertake ChildLine’s volunteer training course and I went on to complete over 200 hours of telephone and online counselling for children and young people. Subsequently I have been a counsellor with Heads Together Youth Counselling Service (Redhill) and Jump Start Youth Counselling Service (Sutton). I am currently the Manager of Heads Together, overseeing a team of 25 counsellors and 4 clinical supervisors. My experience as both a counsellor and manager within youth counselling has given me valuable insight into the challenges facing young people and the many and varied ways in which they can be supported towards good emotional health and living with hope and positivity to achieve their full potential.
I undertake ongoing training to meet BACP requirements for Accredited members.
Over the past three years I have attended workshops and continuing professional development training covering self-harm, working with suicidal young people, recognising grooming behaviours and preventing childhood sexual abuse, safeguarding children and early help assessment and intervention. I also recently attended Mental Health First Aid training tailored for work with young people.
Areas of counselling I deal with
I specialise in working with adolescents, young adults and parents facing issues such as:
- Grief, loss and bereavement
- Stress, anxiety and panic attacks
- Eating difficulties
- Loneliness and social isolation
- Self esteem
- Relationship difficulties
- Emotional impact of childhood abuse
Working with young people
I believe it is important to recognise the uniqueness of adolescence. Adolescence is a period of profound change and development – many young people thrive on the challenges they face as they transition from childhood to adulthood but many others struggle with the psychological, social and emotional changes they are experiencing. Sometimes young people need support to navigate their way to becoming an adult; sometimes parents need support to equip them to be the best parent they can be in sometimes challenging circumstances.
I am committed building empathic, non-judgemental therapeutic relationships with all clients where we work together towards mutually-agreed counselling goals, self awareness and acceptance.
