About Susan

I qualified as a counsellor in 2003 and I am accredited with the British Associated of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).  I have extensive experience in many therapeutic modalities including:

  • Psychodynamic
  • CBT
  • Humanistic

I bring all of my training and life experience to my therapeutic work offering a tailor made approach to each individual client.

I have extensive experience of working with adolescents, I worked in The Wellbeing Centre providing student counselling at the University of Surrey for 9 years.  I have also worked in private practice for many years with Individuals and Couples on a wide range of issues.

We live in a very complex world and levels of stress and anxiety are unprecedented.  However, equally there has never been a time when we have had better access to the tools and resources to know and understand ourselves.  The pressure does not necessarily go away but through counselling, psychotherapy and personal development we can react in ways that support us rather than overwhelm us.

It is a daunting step to start therapeutic work but the research shows that 80% of people feel better after therapy (1) and that 65% of people improve after just 7 sessions (2).

It is my job to create a supportive environment to help work through any difficulties you may have.  I offer short and long term, face to face counselling at the Healthcare On Demand clinic here in central Guildford.

PGDip Psychosynthesis Counselling (Psychosynthesis and Education Trus, 2003)
Psychosynthesis works with the symptoms and personal issues that trigger people to seek therapy and also with the bigger picture of meaning and purpose to help individuals thrive, not just survive.

Diploma in Adolescent Counselling (Westminster Pastoral Foundation, 2008)
This training was invaluable in my work with young people, from age 14 years and over, going through the transition from childhood to young adulthood and from home to more independent living. I have 9 years experience of counselling young people as part of my former role within the University of Surrey.

Certificate in Couples Counselling Short Course (Relate, 2004)
As my couples work has evolved I have also incorporated Imago Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy into my work and see my role as a coach to support the couple relationship in opening to a deeper level of connection and intimacy.

As well as many years of individual therapy, I have also regularly attended courses over the years to ensure that I am working at the highest professional and ethical standards.  This includes courses in:  Family Constellations, Ecotherapy, Hoffman Process, Thought Field Therapy, CBT and many more.

I attend regular supervision and keep my Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) status current.

I am particularly interested and experienced in working with:

  • Adolescents and young people
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Attachment issues
  • Self-harm
  • Self-esteem
  • Trauma
  • Unresolved childhood issues
  • Phobias
  • Psycho-somatic symptoms impacting physical health
  • Mid-life crisis of meaning
  • Divorce/separation
  • Spirituality
  • Relationship issues including codependency and love addiction

I qualified as a clinical supervisor at the Centre for Supervision and Team Development. This course was developed by Robin Shohet and Joan Wilmot and their seven eyed model emphasises the process of therapeutic work as well as the content.  I have experience of supervising qualified therapists and those in training at both the University of Surrey and training organisations in London.  I am passionate about supervision and feel it can be used in all walks of life, including teaching, law, social work and in just about any setting it allows reflective work to support all of our best efforts.

My fees are £60 for 60 minute supervision sessions.
